Support for refugee pregnant women and young mothers

The time of pregnancy and birth is a vulnerable time for the healthy development of the child as well as the mental and physical health of mother and child. Women who have had to flee from war and crises have an enormous strength to take care of their families under the most difficult conditions. Two and a half years ago vivo international together with Aktion Mensch started a project to support traumatized refugee pregnant women and young mothers.

The psychodiagnostic investigations of 14 pregnant refugees and 35 mothers in the project “Pregnancy and Maternity of Traumatised Refugee Women” show that 30% of these women are severely burdened and need psychotherapeutic support. Thus, 13 women have already taken advantage of (trauma)therapeutic offers in the project. Even more women need support in the form of psychosocial offers and counselling. The opportunity to talk about one’s own worries and problems without burdening anyone in the family, as well as to develop explanations for one’s own symptoms and complaints, represents a completely new experience for many women and became possible with the help of our interpreters. It turned out that despite the existence of local, well-developed networks of early help, refugees often do not get the help intended for pregnant women in Germany and that, although these women are particularly burdened. The project has made it easier for many women to access other services.

The project has become an important institution for pregnant women and mothers in the district of Constance and beyond, thanks to the full-time staff and volunteers who have been sensitised in their work with refugees by workshops on traumatisation. Gladly we would like to continue therefore the co-operation with Aktion Mensch . We are pleased about the successful Germany-wide interlacing with organizations active in the support of pregnant refugees, by which we can make a significant contribution for the improvement of the health support of refugee pregnant women and young mothers.
